Any work we have done in the past is done on the back of the research grants we get - and has to be well hidden. I've discussed this with the main funder (US Dept of Energy) in the past and they are happy about not releasing the original station data. (...) Some of you may not know, but the dataset has been sent by someone at the Met Office to McIntyre. The Met Office are trying to find out who did this. I've ascertained it most likely came from there, as I'm the only one who knows where the files are here.

The whole Macintyre issue got me thinking about over-fitting and the potential bias of screening against the target climate parameter. Therefore, I thought I'd play around with some randomly generated time-series and see if I could 'reconstruct' northern hemisphere temperatures. I first generated 1000 random time-series in Excel - I did not try and approximate the persistence structure in tree-ring data. The autocorrelation therefore of the time-series was close to zero, although it did vary between each time-series. Playing around therefore with the AR persistent structure of these time-series would make a difference. However, as these series are generally random white noise processes, I thought this would be a conservative test of any potential bias. (...) The reconstructions clearly show a 'hockey-stick' trend. I guess this is precisely the phenomenon that Macintyre has been going on about. It is certainly worrying, but I do not think that it is a problem so long as one screens against LOCAL temperature data and not large scale temperature where trend dominates the correlation.

Climategate 2.0

Está aí, mesmo a tempo de Durban! Quase exactamente dois anos depois da versão 1.0. Surgiu inicialmente aqui. Obviamente, também já está no Watts Up With That.

As mensagens devem ser consideradas um complemento ao Climategate 1.0. Nenhuma mensagem nova de 2010 e 2011 aparece na lista. O ficheiro contém, no entanto, cerca de 220 mil mensagens encriptadas, que não se sabe muito bem o que são...

A única referência interessante a Portugal, é uma mensagem já antiga, a "clamar" por acção:

We would like to invite proposals from activists working on climate campaigning. Following an activist and NGO meeting in March this year, attended by climate activists from Europe, Asia, USA, Australia and Latin America, funding was obtained to support two people to work on a project connected to the sixth United Nations Climate Convention, otherwise known as the Conference of the Parties (COP6), which will happen in Autumn/Winter 2000/2001. The United Nations is currently considering only one possible location for the meeting - den Haag, The Netherlands. The International working group formed after the activist and NGO meeting are looking for two people who would be able to create something innovative and effective with this funding. They will be based in a Climate research group in Portugal, 'Euronatura'. The campaign will be supported by the International working group which has experience of United Nations negotiations, direct action, campaigning, economics and climate science. Groups supporting this campaign include : eyfa, Aseed, Carbusters Magazine, Korean Ecological Youth, Free The Planet USA, EuroNatura, Climate Action Network Latin America, Climate Action Network Central and Eastern Europe and Oilwatch Europe. The thing that joins these people together is the desire to work together to radicalise the agenda of the climate negotiations. The current direction of the negotiations cannot hope to define targets nor build mechanisms of implementation and compliance which will stop the currently dangerous emissions levels of Greenhouse Gases. Ideally, the collaboration between the two funded volunteers, Euronatura and the International working group, will touch on all aspects of climate change and the related campaigns of oil, forest, marine and transport. Equally, the collaboration will be aware of all strategies to counter the weakness of the United Nations and the dominance of certain lobbying groups (notably the oil and nuclear industry). The strategies discussed by the International working group revolve around direct action, research and negotiation.

Lâmpadas economizadoras com muitos problemas

Via Musings from the Chiefio descobrimos mais um conjunto de vídeos com Verdades Inconvenientes sobre as lâmpadas economizadoras. As queixas de saúde, o electro-stress, a electricidade suja, a presença de mercúrio, são abordadas nos vários vídeos abaixo. Os cinco primeiros são mais sérios, enquanto o último é mais humorístico...

É bom saber que os Media se começam a interessar pelo assunto! Temos abordado estas questões ao longo dos últimos anos, estando agrupadas na tag específica das lâmpadas economizadoras, mas são poucas as referências que chegam às pessoas que as utilizam. Eu, da minha parte, vou investigar as que tenho lá em casa. Entretanto, já açambarquei algumas lâmpadas incandescentes, antes que elas acabem...

Antón Uriarte é um geógrafo espanhol, que tenho referenciado no Ecotretas, e cujo blog CO2 está incluído na lista de blogs de cépticos internacionais. Antón editou uma compilação online da História do Clima da Terra, e que é de leitura obrigatória para todos aqueles que desejam saber como foram as Alterações Climáticas do passado. Mesmo sendo em Espanhol, a sua leitura é muito fácil.

Dinheiro pela sanita abaixo

O Diário Económico avançava hoje que as Famílias em Portugal vão ter a electricidade mais cara da Europa. Como os leitores sabem, a nossa energia ainda não é a mais cara da Europa, pelo que foi necessário ler a notícia impressa para perceber que o Secretário de Estado da Energia, Henrique Gomes, proferiu tal declaração enquadrada de outra forma, e que o nosso "verde" DE destacou de forma distinta:

estes diferimentos não serão suficientes para impedir que Portugal, em 2012, fique em quarto lugar no "ranking" de preços do segmento doméstico mais elevados da Europa e, corrigida a paridade do poder de compra, o custo da electricidade no sector doméstico é já mesmo o mais elevado

Como chegamos aqui também os leitores do Ecotretas já sabem. Como vamos sair é uma conversa diferente! Ainda ontem, o mesmo Henrique Gomes dava o mote, também no Diário Económico: É preciso eliminar os apoios excessivos à produção energética. Tal como se discute aqui ao lado em Espanha, onde o próprio presidente da Iberdrola, José Ignacio Sánchez Galán, avançou com um diagnóstico claro: El español es uno de los sistemas eléctricos donde el apoyo a las renovables supone un mayor coste por MWh total producido en el sistema. Mas isso tudo deve estar para mudar no próximo fim de semana, com o regresso do PP ao poder.

Com estes dados em cima da mesa, não tardará muito para que deixemos (contribuintes e consumidores) de deitar dinheiro pela sanita das renováveis abaixo, que é efectivamente o que estamos a fazer com esta política...

O Ambiente nas mãos da máfia verde

A capa de hoje do Jornal I não deixa dúvidas: Negócios de milhões nas mãos da máfia verde. O Jornal I junta-se assim a um cada vez maior número de Media (eg. TVI, TVI, SIC) que descobriram as Verdades Inconvenientes que se escondem atrás do Ambiente e da Ecologia.

A Religião Verde contra-atacou imediatamente. No blog Ambio, Henrique Pereira dos Santos (ex Vice-Presidente do Instituto de Conservação da Natureza), logo de manhazinha, escreveu uma carta aberta para a jornalista. Com ameaças veladas claras, como se verifica pelas linhas seguintes:

• O que gostaria de lhe perguntar com esta carta é se dorme bem de noite.
  
• Se consegue olhar as pessoas comuns olhos nos olhos depois de escrever, o que é o menos, e publicar, o que é extraordinário
  
• Francamente, acha normal o que escreveu?
  
• É que quando os transitórios donos do poder já de lá tiverem saído, a Senhora ainda terá de escrever para jornais.
  
• (...) a conduzem a parvoíces como as que escreveu que, infelizmente para si, só a prejudicam.

Infelizmente, esta perseguição a quem se mete com a Religião Verde está em alta. No outro dia referia como os alarmistas gostariam de realizar uns autos-de-fé. No passado fim de semana, eu próprio fui expulso do Facebook. Em termos internacionais, há ainda o caso da jornalista alemã Irene Meichsner, premiada em jornalismo científico, e que no rescaldo do Climategate, escreveu umas verdades inconvenientes sobre o IPCC. Foi assediada e achincalhada por um dos mais reconhecidos alarmistas alemães, Stefan Rahmstorf. A jornalista levou-o a tribunal, e ganhou a causa...

Esperemos que Isabel Tavares mantenha a coragem que revelou, e que não se veja obrigada a seguir as pisadas de Irene Meichsner.

Hidroelectricidade em Portugal

De vez em quando tropeço em documentos que são verdadeiramente interessantes. Este chama-se Hidroelectricidade em Portugal e foi publicado pela REN em 2002. O documento tem algumas pérolas, nomeadamente a vertente histórica, incluindo a fase inicial da produção de hidroelectricidade em Portugal, e que o documento encaixa entre o final do século XIX e 1930. O documento tem algumas imagens de centros produtores que hoje já não existem, ou que estão escondidos por esse Portugal fora, quase autênticos monumentos históricos. A da imagem não está incluída, ficando aqui o desafio ao leitor para a tentar identificar (clique para ver melhor)! A quem a identificar será dada uma menção honrosa, por parte do Ecotretas, num post subsequente.

O documento revela ainda aspectos como o da importância do aproveitamento do sistema do Douro, ou como fazer a expansão da componente hidroeléctrica do sistema electroprodutor a longo prazo. Um documento de consulta importante, especialmente num momento em que muita gente fala do assunto, mas não entende, ou não quer entender, a sua importância.
